Nonequilibrium Phenomena in Liquid Crystals
The briefest glance through the literature on nonequilibrium phenomena shows that complex fluids, particularly liquid crystals, are often favored for experimental investigations. This might seem surprising in that complex fluids, as befits their name, are difficult materials: experiments require subtle tricks to prepare reproducible samples; theoretical descriptions lead to notoriously messy eq...
متن کاملCollective phenomena in defect crystals
We investigate the effects of interactions between substitutional defects on the properties of defect crystals at low temperatures, where defect motion is governed by quantum effects. Both thermal and dynamical properties are considered. The influence of interactions on defect motion is described via a collective effect. Our treatment is semiclassical in the sense that we analyze collective eff...
متن کاملFragmentation phenomena in populations of magmatic crystals
Fragmentation of crystals is an important mechanism, and a component of particle dynamics in igneous and metamorphic rocks that has received surprisingly little attention. Recent advances in textural analysis, extraction techniques, digital imaging, and computer-assisted measurements enable rapid accumulation of 3D data on particle shapes and size distributions. This paper reviews fragment size...
متن کاملAnomalous Phenomena and Spectral Tailoring in Photonic Crystals
Photonic crystals are recently discovered meta-materials whose optical properties arise from periodic refractive index variations. In this thesis I examine various aspects of photonic crystals including a self-assembled photonic crystal, anomalous properties arising from periodicity, and tailoring absorption and emission spectra. Fabricating photonic crystals with the desired properties in the ...
متن کاملCooperative phenomena in crystals and social choice theory
In 1960, C. Domb published a paper entitled On the theory of cooperative phenomena in crystals in which he presented an expression for the number of cycles of length l in a triangular lattice. This expression was erroneous. We present a correct expression and we show that it is linked, in social choice theory, to the probability that all candidates are tied in an election with the Borda rule.
